Architectural registration in Thailand began in 1965 when the Architectural profession ACT B.E. 2508 was introduced by Thai Government. Since then an architect who wants to practice must have a license. At the start, the professional work was simple and limited to architectural design, supervision and consultation. After 30 years of growth and progress, a change on practical control was apparently required to cope with the more diversified and complicated service scope, together with the larger project scales, types and numbers as well as to promote the professional capability and development. In the year 2000, with the strong effort of the architects themselves, the Architect Act B.E. 2543 was therefore enacted to replace the Architectural Professional Act B.E. 2508 and professional registering and licensing have expanded to cover the disciplines of architecture, interior architecture & design, landscape architecture and urban design & planning
Under the former act, architectural professional was controlled by the Committee Controlling Architectural Practice - a body and office appointed by the government under the Ministry of Interior. The latter act has established the Architect Council of Thailand as an authority on architectural practice and a representative body of architects and persons performing architecture-related works. The Council operates through the Council Committee of 20 members elected and appointed as described below.
- Ten members elected from the council members who do not hold any faculty office of any degree-level academic institution;
- Five members elected from the council members who hold a faculty office of a degree-level academic institution;
- Five members appointed from the council members by the Cabinet through the proposal of the Interior Minister.
